Forty-four No’s, One YesEmail page | Print page

Pray without ceasing. 1 Thess. 5:17.

Independence Day is my smallest dog. At 55 pounds, she’s my little runt puppy. When she was born she fell on the floor, still in her birth sack that had torn. Her little tiny yelps woke me up. A fine “canine midwife” I turned out to be! Midgie, her mother, was just as worn out as I was. It took a while to find Indy on the floor, behind the bed. Indy turned out to be one of 10 puppies born during the wee hours of July 4.

Around her fourth birthday Indy had an epilepsy seizure. At first I had no idea what was happening. After consulting with Doc, my vet, we decided to let things go and see what would develop. She didn’t have the seizures on a regular basis--every 30 to 60 days at the most. Because of the infrequency we didn’t medicate her.

A year later I had told her how proud I was of her for not having a seizure for 90 days. Within 30 minutes she had a seizure, followed by another, and then another. Over the next four days she had one seizure after another, 30 to 60 minutes apart. Doc sent me some medicine, but unfortunately nothing seemed to stop the horrible seizures. It is one thing for a human to have a seizure; it is quite another for an animal to have one. I was alone, and it was difficult to deal with completely by myself.

With every episode, I would pray, “Please, God! Help me! I can’t take much more.” Then I would feel horrible. Poor little Indy was having a harder time than I was! My other three dogs weren’t really dealing with this situation either. After a really bad episode, I asked Indy if I should put her down. She reached up and nipped my nose.

Finally, as mysteriously as they began, the seizures stopped. She had had 45 seizures in four days. It took nearly a week for her to return to health, and she had absolutely no side effects. Today Indy is healthy, happy, and as normal as she can possibly be. There have been no ill effects from the seizures, nor has she had any since. It really is a miracle. I had prayed 45 times. I am thankful I got a yes to one of those prayers. I’m thankful God cares for pets as well as humans.
