Research to be done before applying for a TV licence
The following technical information is often needed
- In order to apply for a licence
- In order to purchase a transmitter
GENERAL QUESTIONS
Obtain this information from a TV engineer or large TV sales or repair shop.
Information needed
1 What bands of transmission are used ? (VHF, UHF or both?)
2 What broadcast standard is used ? e.g PAL / NTSC And what version: B.G, BG, I, K etc.)
3 What frequency ranges can be picked up by the TVs ?
[Example: 134Mhz to 174Mhz for VHF.or 400Mhz to 512Mhz for UHF.]
4 Type of modulation used
e.g. 6Mhz to 8Mhz bandwidth, include audio carrier.
SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
Obtain this information from the broadcasting authority who issue licences
[Not the same as the national broadcaster]
5 What technology may be used – Digital / Analog or both?
6 What is the maximum transmitter power allowed ? [E.g. 10 watts, 500 watts ]
7 Do the laws allow for low-powered broadcasts without a licence? If so, how many Km radius is allowed?
8 What antenna polarization is used by the main broadcasters? [e.g. Horizontal, Vertical or Circular)
9 What are the conditions for granting a licence? [e.g. Local studio, % of local content, etc. ] Obtain in writing.
10 Are church organizations prohibited from applying for licences?
11 What other church organizations have licences to broadcast?
12 When a licence is granted, does it cover only a city or the whole region / country?
13 Is a licence required for a Microwave link from studio to tower (often on 2.4Ghz)?
14 Does a new tower need to be approved by aviation authorities?
