GUIDE TO TESTING RECEPTION  FOR NEW L.P.T.V. STATIONS

 1          Why this is needed:

When a new transmitter is installed, it is extremely useful to conduct a brief testing procedure to establish where and how far from the transmitter good reception can be obtained.   This information is useful for the following:

  •  The local church or “owner”

           a)  So that they know the reception area when promoting and managing the station.
           b)  So that they can compare performance annually to ensure that there has been no deterioration

  • For Hope Channel office

           a)  To be able to compare performance in different towns
           b)  To be able to ensure performance is what was expected

2         Equipment needed

           The following equipment is needed:

           a)   A small, portable TV which operates on a car battery (cigarette lighter) – it need not be a colour model

           b)   A Grid antenna which can be connected to the TV.  This should be mounted on a wooden or steel pole (at least 2m)

           c)   A GPS to measure distances, if possible

           d)   A signal strength meter is useful, but not essential

3         Testing procedure

If possible, obtain a map of the reception area.   Mark testing sites which are at least 5km from the transmitter and:

            a)  As far as possible, but within sight of the transmitter tower.

            b)  In opposite directions (East, West, etc.)

            c)   Go to each site and carry out tests.

            d)   Also try to get reception if tower not in sight, and include in report below.  (Mark these with $)

            e)   Place TV on roof of car, first using its own “bunny ears” antenna, and then the Grid antenna
