Date Layer Bars

Date Filling:


Combine 4 Cups of Medjool dates and 4 Cups of water in saucepan.


Cover and cook, stirring often until it is the consistency of jam. Blend if necessary and add more water if needed.




1/2 cup margarine


1/4 cups brown sugar


1 1/2 cups unbleached white flour


1 tsp salt


1 1/2 cups quick oats


2 Tbsp wheat germ


1/2 cup chopped walnuts


1 Tbsp water




Cream the margarine and sugar.


Mix dry ingredients into creamed mixture.


Add water and mix until crumbly.


Firmly pack half the mixture into oiled baking dish.


Spread with date filling.


Top with remaining crumbs.


Bake at 350 oF (180 oC) for 30 minutes.


Allow to cool and chill in refrigerator before cutting into bars.
